Motorway aires are designed to provide a suitable environment for relaxing, refreshing and recovering during the long, hard journeys. As well as facilities of often dubious nature, picnic tables and seats, a telephone kiosk, there are often optional extras such as a play area or a display related to some local interest or event.
aire de garonneMany large motorway aires are franchised from the major petrol companies, such as Total or Esso. However, major French supermarket chains have bought into motorway aires, and every so often you will find an aire that is run by, say, Carrefour or Leclerc. This Leclerc aire is a pleasant surprise, being clean inside and out, and well-appointed. And the prices are slightly lower than those in other aires with shopping and fuel.
