living in an innumerate world – men know women who do not exist! Yet again, a newspaper (this time French) is reporting straight-faced that “on average throughout their life, heterosexual men have 11.3 partners, while heterosexual women have 3.4 partners”. The figures come from a survey done by the French national survey office, INSERM. Do neither the reporter, nor INSERM, appreciate that these figures are clearly impossible? Where are the men finding all these extra partners? Or is there a ‘plot’ to bury the fact that the survey respondents are lying on a large scale? And why would these people lie? A guess is that the men hope to be seen as more virile than they are, while the women wish not to be regarded as ‘slags’. |
