the
spanish vuelta The Spanish version of a cycle race around all its country starts today in Seville. A bit younger than the world-renowned Tour de France at seventy-five years, this year’s Vuelta is going to be truly ecological. This ties in well with Spain’s burgeoning alternative energies industry, both solar and wind. Watching the Vuelta in Spain is very similar to watching the Tour in France. abelard.org has several pages giving general advice on how to be a effective road-side spectator.
Don’t forget, the Vuelta is being broadcast on 24 TV channels worldwide, including Eurosport UK. You can follow the day-to-day details of the Vuelta at the highly disorganised official website. This linked entry page is crude. To reach the more useful daily information, click on the word ‘route’ on the horizontal menu, or go directly to this page. Now go down to where the bar reads maps and routes, with tabs to access things like the profile and the last 3 km. On these pages as well, you may need to scroll down for any benefit. The Vuelta organisers could learn a lot by looking at the Tour de France website. In the hot southern countryside, there are long stretches empty of anything except lovely semi-desert landscape. Occasionally, there maybe one person sheltering from the belting sun under a tree, even on climbs where in France the way would be seething with fêting followers. The crowding is often far less oppressive, or exciting according to your taste. the spanish vueltaThis year, La Vuelta is 3,352.6 km/2,083.2 miles long There are twenty-two teams:

team time trial - saturday 28 august, in sevilleBecause Spain, especially further south and inland, is so hot in the summer, the first day’s racing is being held in th cool of the evening. Mind you, ‘cool’ is relative. For the earlier riders, the temperature is predicted at 33°C, while towards the end of the evening the temperature will fall to about 30°C. The show should be very pretty beneath the floodlights. Here is the start times for the twenty-two teams, who are covering 16.5km this evening.: 1. Footon-Servetto 22:04 As part of the green theme of this year’s Vuelta, the course is being lit by LED lamps, using 90% less energy and having a 60,000 hour life-span.
environment firstTo demostrate their commitment to sustainability, La Vuelta is taking actions this year to ensure a responsible use of energy and to reduce its environmental impact. In conjunction with this effort, this year’s main sponsor is the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (I.D.A.E). The Unipublic is providing 3,000 bidegradable bottles - the Nature Bottle - which degrade in one year, especially useful as the Vuelta rides through Natural Parks: Rat Penat, Lagos de Covadonga, Peña Cabarga, Bola del Mundo ... As mentioned earlier, the lighting for the first stage is by LEDs. Of course, there will be cleaning teams following the Vuelta, to return the countryside to its former clean state, or better, after a stage is completed. Also, in towns through which the Vuelta passes, another sponsor kaWarna will develop projects to improve lighting efficiency in these municipalities. a select dictionary
The following is an exceeding boring book, almost like reading a telephone directory. It has notes on all previous runnings of the Vuelta. But in among the addresses and telephone numbers, you will discover all manner of hints on cycling tactics, with interposed examples of dubious practice and cheating. You will also find snippets on the disturbed political background of Spain, from right back to the Civil War and the Franco regime and up until modern times, against which the Vuelta has been held, or not held.
