are low levels of radiation positive?

Worth a read.

“Those who survived the immediate atomic blasts but were near Ground Zero died at a high rate from excess exposure to radiation. The tens of thousands more distant from Ground Zero, and who received lower exposures to radiation, did not die in droves. To the contrary, and surprisingly, they outlived their counterparts in the general population who received no exposure to radiation from the blasts.”

“ The only evidence that exists as to the health of humans who have been irradiated at low levels points to a benefit, not a harm. Difficult though it may be to overcome the fear of radiation that has been drubbed into us since childhood, there is no scientific proof whatsoever to view the radiation emitted from the Fukushima plant as dangerous to the Japanese population.”

alleged link between swine flu vaccine, a gene and narcolepsy

“Cases of narcolepsy have been reported among children and adolescents who received the vaccine during the swine flu epidemic in 2009 in 12 countries, with Sweden and Finland reporting the most cases. A total of 60 cases were reported in Finland.

“On Feb. 1, Finland's National Institute of Health and Welfare reported the results of an analysis of all new narcolepsy cases reported between 2006 and 2010 among those born after 1990. The analysis found an increased risk of narcolepsy among those ages 4 to 19 who received the Pandemerix H1N1 vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline. The risk was about nine times higher among those who got the vaccine, corresponding to a risk of about one case out of every 12,000 people in that age group vaccinated, officials estimated. Those ages 5 to 15 appeared to have the greatest risk.

“Of 22 of the cases in Finland tested so far, all were carrying a gene known to increase the risk for the condition, the WHO announced Tuesday.”

This looks interesting, a link between a human gene and an environmental trigger, leading to a neurological problem.

transplanted bone marrow appears to suppress aids

“A leukaemia patient has been cured of the HIV Aids virus with a bone marrow transplant, it was claimed today.

“Researchers said the transplant involved bone marrow stem cells from a donor with a genetic resistance to HIV.

“Around three-and-a-half years after ending anti-retroviral therapy, the patient has no sign of infection.” [Quoted from breakingnews.ie]

“The researchers stressed that this would never become a standard treatment for HIV. Bone marrow stem cell transplants are rigorous and dangerous and require the patient to first have his or her own bone marrow completely destroyed.” [Quoted from reuters.com]

  converting waste plastic to oil

“In the reactor, the plastic hydrocarbons are cracked into various shorter hydrocarbon chains and exit in a gaseous state. [...] From the processor, the gasses containing gasoline and diesel are condensed into a temporary fuel tank. Additional light fractions, called off-gas, such as methane, ethane, butane and propane, exit the temporary fuel storage tank and are compressed and stored. Butane and propane liquefy when compressed and can be stored and sold separately. The remaining off-gas is cycled back to the furnace, which heats the reactor.”

  • The process accepts raw unwashed, mixed plastics
  • Minimal external energy required
  • Approximately one liter of oil is extracted from a kilogram of plastic.
  • The gas emitted (a by-product) provides the energy necessary to fuel the process.
  • Due to a catalyst (trade secret) and a highly optimized process, oil can be extracted in 4 hours from a large source of raw unwashed, mixed plastics.
  • Processor footprint requires less than 500 square feet (46 square meters)
  • Approximately one litre of oil is extracted for every kilogram of plastic
  • The entire cycle for one 1800 pound load takes less than one hour.

highly speculatiive work in bioinformatics

“Two papers earlier this year also found evidence of RNA virus genes being inserted, but the new paper is more comprehensive. The authors searched the genomes of 48 vertebrate species, looking for a total of 5,666 viral genes from dozens of virus families.”

Bioinformatics is the analysis of biological information using computers and statistical techniques.
